El Monte, Los Angeles County
El Monte calls itself the end of the Santa Fe Trail. Wagon parties that had crossed the Southwest began settling here around 1850 on fertile land between the Rio Hondo and the San Gabriel River, making it one of the earliest American farm settlements in the region. A small park at Valley Boulevard and Santa Anita Avenue commemorates the pioneers.
